Net Zero by 2050, a roadmap

THE PAPER PRESENTS SOME ELEMENTS OF THE REPORT NET ZERO BY 2050 RELEASED BY THE INTERNATIONAL ENERGY AGENCY. AFTER A DESCRIPTION ABOUT THE SCENARIO DESIGN, THE ESSENTIAL CONDITIONS AND THE PRIORITY ACTIONS TO ATTAIN THE GOAL ARE ILLUSTRATED
Net Zero by 2050: a Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector è il primo studio completo al mondo su come passare a un sistema energetico net zero entro il 2050, garantendo nel contempo forniture energetiche stabili e convenienti, fornendo accesso universale all’energia e consentendo una solida crescita economica. Il report della IEA stabilisce un percorso verso un’economia energetica pulita e resiliente, ma esamina anche le incertezze chiave, come i ruoli della bioenergia, della cattura dela CO2 e dei cambiamenti comportamentali. La maggior parte delle riduzioni globali delle emissioni tra oggi e il 2030 nel percorso dello zero netto verrà da tecnologie già disponibili oggi. Ma nel 2050 quasi la metà delle riduzioni proviene da tecnologie che sono attualmente solo in fase di dimostrazione o prototipo.
Questo richiede una ridefinizione delle priorità della spesa per la ricerca e lo sviluppo da parte dei governi, nonché per la dimostrazione e l’implementazione di tecnologie pulite, ponendole al centro della politica energetica e climatica. I progressi nelle aree delle batterie avanzate, degli elettrolizzatori per l’idrogeno e della cattura e stoccaggio diretto della CO2 dell’aria possono essere particolarmente importanti. Ma una transizione di tale portata e velocità non può essere realizzata senza il sostegno e forte partecipazione dei cittadini.
The International Energy Agency released recently the first comprehensive energy roadmap of how to transition to a net zero energy system and the actions governments need to rapidly put in place to boost clean energy and reduce fossil fuel use, increase economic growth, create millions of jobs and keep net zero emissions reachable. The report presents a pathway to reach this goal globally, compatible with a 50 per cent probability of limiting the average global temperature rise to 1.5 °C. This pathway called the Net-Zero Emissions (NZE) Scenario builds on the IEA best understanding of the availability and prospects of technologies, potential for behavioral changes, as well as a fair and balanced approach towards each country’s own circumstances. It takes into detailed account the physical energy infrastructure that is in place today, including for different types of fuel supply, power generation and end-uses such as industry, transport and buildings.
Scenario design
The NZE Scenario is based on three key principles:
- The uptake of all technologies and emissions reduction options is dictated by costs, technology maturity, policy preferences and potential trade-offs with broader societal goals, and market and country conditions.
- All countries cooperate towards achieving net-zero emissions worldwide.[...]
