Scope of this paper is to provide an OEM’s viewpoint
on the interventions on the thermal power fleet, necessary to reach the 20-20-20 goals set by the European Union.
Through the creation of an analytical model that we applied
to the Italian case, we reached two conclusions.
Ansaldo Energia makes suggestions for the appropriate upgrading interventions on the Italian thermal fleet that can lead to a reduction
of at least 17 MTon CO₂ emissions.
Additionally, the extensive conversion of power plants
to Combined Cycles fuelled by Natural Gas can lead to a further emission reduction of at least 19 MTon CO₂ emissions.
While this paper presents in detail the application of this model
to the Italian thermal power generation fleet and major refineries,
the model is sufficiently general to be applied as an analytical tool
in most countries with environmental targets.
